What you change first is a bit of a chicken and egg phenomenon. I recently
trained and completed a half marathon for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society.
I did it because I needed more structure to ramp up my physical fitness and
I wanted to give back as well. The shift in how I saw myself was
unexpected---I suddenly realized that I am now an athlete! I intend to keep
doing walking marathons and training. So there is something cyclical in the
change process.
In the world of ToP methods and work of the Institute of Cultural Affairs,
we capture this concept through the use of Image Shift Theory. This refers
to how you alter your ecology of thought to surface new frames or realities.
As a change agent, you can use the tools and elements of this theory to
shape the experience of individuals and groups, helping them to have these
internal shifts and see themselves and their situation in new ways that
provide great potential for them.
To change the behavior, you have to change the way people see themselves.
Nothing really ever changes unless someone changes.
Indeed. And seeing the structures that underlie your surface behaviours is a
powerful way of seeing deeper into yourself. Hence, change becomes easier to
create.
Cheers!
Bruce
