Joan and Michael Holleran's book, "Finding the Extra-Ordinary Marriage" is
about using Appreciative Inquiry to identify what makes your marriage
resilient. That's probably what you're thinking of, and you may still be
able to download their earlier edition for free.
My favorite couples book though, and one that helped me a lot in a tough
relationship, is actually based on a problem-solving model : "We Can Work it
Out" by Clifford Notarius and Howard Markman. It's basically traditional
dispute resolution, a la "Getting to Yes," applied to marriage and other
deep relationships.
Good luck to your friends.

friends have newly separated and are already unhappy about having separated
and seeing their marriage (10 years) almost crumble. t5ghe two are one
extrovert and spontaneous , and the other a relative relticent and thinking
type. They do not seem to know how to redress their differences, yet they
deny that it is beyond recovery. A professional counsellor has not succeeded
to help them.
