Hi, everyone! There are several important (to me, at least)
announcements below. Hope you find them of value. :)

1. Help develop principles to be submitted to Obama administration
2. Pre-conference training proposals due TOMORROW for 2009 IAP2
conference
3. Save the date for the "Engaging The Other" conference
4. Discounts on top-notch trainings for paid NCDD members
5. Some headlines from the News & Perspectives blog

1. Help develop principles to be submitted to Obama administration

We are facing an unprecedented opportunity in the fields of public
engagement, conflict resolution and collaboration. President Obama has
demonstrated his commitment to participation, transparency and
openness in numerous ways we've all taken note of. Everyone in our
field wants to connect and communicate with the new administration...

Rather than each of us contacting the administration separately with
mixed messages and various levels of success, we believe we could make
a greater impact working together. Can we collaborate or unify to
present a collective source of principles, practices, talent and
resources that this administration and nation will need in the next
four years?

As a first step, a few of us have decided to lead a transparent effort
to encourage people in our field to collectively agree (as much as
possible) on principles or standards for public engagement. We've
begun by posting a bunch of existing sets of principles on the NCDD
site in forum software that anyone can contribute and respond to.

Please join us today at http://thataway.org/2009/pep_project/ - click
on the right tab to sign up, then click on "discussions" to get back
to the main page. We ask that you:

1. Respond to the principles, articles, etc. that are posted. What do
you like about them? What do you disagree with? What would you change?
2. Add any sets of principles or criteria for public engagement you're
aware of that aren't yet posted.
3. Check back later after our smaller group has created a draft set of
principles based on your feedback and ideas. (I'll email this list
again when it's time.)

We hope to end up with a set of principles most of you will feel
comfortable endorsing. Please help us get there!

    * Tom Atlee, President of the Co-Intelligence Institute
    * Stephen Buckley, CEO of U.S. Transparency
    * John Godec, Board member of the International Association of
Public Participation (IAP2)
    * Reynolds-Anthony Harris, Managing Director of Lyceum Patners & Co.
    * Sandy Heierbacher, Director of the National Coalition for
Dialogue & Deliberation (NCDD)
    * Steve Pyser, Editor of the International Journal of Public
Participation
    * Stephanie Roy McCallum, Immediate Past President of the
International Association of Public Participation (IAP2)

2. Pre-conference training proposals due TOMORROW for 2009 IAP2
conference

Proposals for pre-conference trainings are due tomorrow (Friday,
February 27th) by noon GMT for the 17th Annual IAP2 conference in San
Diego, California this September 21st through 23rd. Facilitators of
pre-conference trainings set their own participant fees for their
trainings.

The theme for this year’s International Association for Public
Participation (IAP2) conference is Making Sustainable Decisions: The
Price and Promise of Public Participation. As a Conference Partner,
NCDD is playing a major role in the San Diego conference and we hope
to have a large NCDD contingent there. NCDD members will pay a
discounted registration fee for the conference, and we will hold at
least one NCDD gathering and/or workshop at the event.

Visit www.thataway.org/?page_id=1419 or iap2.org for more details
about the event.

3. Save the date for the "Engaging The Other" conference

The 4th Annual International Conference on “Engaging The Other:” The
Power of Compassion is taking place November 13-15 in San Mateo,
California (outside San Francisco), and we encourage all NCDDers
interested in conflict resolution and intergroup relations to attend!
NCDD is co-sponsoring this event with the Common Bond Institute and
the International Humanistic Psychology Association, and registration
will be discounted for NCDD members ($290 rather than $350 for the
early rate).

Engaging The Other (ETO) is an innovative interdisciplinary conference
examining concepts of “The Other” from a universal, cross-cultural
perspective to promote wider public dialogue about concepts of “Us and
Them.”

Learn more about the call for workshops and dialogue group
facilitators at www.thataway.org/?p=1418 or visit www.cbiworld.org/Pages/Conferences_ETO.htm
to learn more about the event.
