Hello all
I was somewhat amused when I saw this research highlighted in the news. McCullough in his book "Beyond Revenge; The Evolution of the Forgiveness Instinct" notes that the act of revenge lights up the pleasure zone in the brain. My amusement comes from the fact that he also says we all have feelings of revenge. We all get pleasure from the thought or the act that "gets back at" others. Revenge served a purpose in our ancestors; it warned possible predators to be careful lest they experience retaliation. McCullough talks about the same function , meta cognition, that David cites, that is the ability to think about our thinking and make decisions from that vantage point. It would seem that we all have the potential of being bullies. The feelings that we call revenge are common to all and when we acknowledge that fact we open the door to dialogue and resolution.

Appreciatively
Joan
