Colleagues,

Two of my doctoral students recently defended their AI dissertations.

Dr. Teresa San Martin conducted her study with at-risk students in an
alternative high school to discover how the students best learn. As a
result, the students developed a sense of empowerment that they could
influence how they were taught as well as contribute to creating an
ecological environment for learning. The teachers listened to the students;
conversation among decision-makers in the district regarding pedagogy for
at-risk students has started. As a result, the educators in this context are
changing their belief system as to how at-risk students best learn. Teresa's
dissertation is posted on the AI commons website.

Dr. Jackie Glasgow conducted her study in a low SES middle school where
students have surpassed state-mandated levels for grade level achievement.
Jackie sought to discover the successful teaching practices of teachers in a
Standard of Excellence elementary school and identify the necessary
ecological conditions for the teachers to sustain and extend their
successful teaching practices. Her findings suggested that the AI process
has the potential to change teachers' pedagogical practices and the
conditions to sustain those practices. The teachers who participated in her
study feel a deeper sense of empowerment and a new vision of optimism, hope,
and a passion for teaching. The teachers have made plans to work with other
teachers throughout the district to re-create a passion for teaching.
Jackie's dissertation is posted on the AI commons website.

Best wishes,

Ray
