If we are comparing countries, then perhaps we need to look also 
at the efficiency with which they convert resources into benefits 
like health and happiness for their people. There is some 
fascinating information on the happy planet index, 
http://www.happyplanetindex.org/. You multiply the happiness and 
longevity of the population and divide it by the ecological 
footprint of the country to get the index.

Some countries are very efficient, often those with a great sense 
of community. They may not be the top of the list for power and 
influence, but the way they behave may have lessons for us all. 
Especially if the oil starts to run out and the hoped for magic 
technological fix doesn't happen.

I have noticed how happy people are in poorer (economically) 
countries and wondered what we can learn from them.
