The Coverdale Organisation in the UK http://www.coverdale.co.uk/ teaches
people to use a network of aims to help them be clearer about the purpose of
an activity and about practical actions. You ask Why? and, critically,
answer the question "in order to", not "because", to get towards purpose.
You keep on asking the question until you get to "It just is". You can then
ask "How?" about the activity to get to concrete plans.

I wondered if this might help you with the people you need to get away from
the detail. If you could give a bit more context, I might be able to be more
helpful.

I have an example of how to use this method to help an individual to be
clearer about his or her purpose and plans that I would be happy to send
you, if you wish.
