Hello Neil....
One thing I'd suggest looking at if interaction among participants is to be encouraged
after the event is "ning.com". You can also do some pre-event things on the site to
create buzz, and to begin some community building. It's one of the growing social
network sites out there that you can set up on your own. A basic ning site is free to
create and use.... depending on the scale of a site you'll need you may have to purchase
an upgrade.
I've found it pretty easy to set up and use. Discussion threads can be created, interest
groups, and documents can be posted and shared. If you want to see one I helped a
group here in Indiana set up, check out: http://sharedFutureIN.ning.com
A couple of other pretty well developed ning sites that I know are:
servant leadership community -- http://servantleadership.ning.com
Smaller Indiana - http://www.smallerindiana.com
As you browse those two sites you'll see all kinds of sub-groups that have self organized,
a variety of blog posts, calendars and more. One of the things I really appreciate about
these sites is the ability to use an RSS feed so that I'm automatically updated on changes
and updates. (for those unfamiliar with how RSS feeds work, visit:
http://www.commoncraft.com/rss_plain_english). That site also has other really good,
SHORT, videos on the various web 2.0 tools, like wikis and blogs.
Good luck!
