To build on Neil’s comments: 

 

1) Structure: I would tend to agree that forcing too much structure is
likely to be counter-productive, while too little will mean important areas
may be missed. I’d suggest keeping a structure in mind and pointing out any
gaps through questions during the open-space phase where people volunteer to
lead innovation teams. 

 

2) the typical summit design includes “creative presentations” during the
Dream phase. These are often humorous skits that are really rapid prototypes
for the future design, since we explicitly ask for feedback on them. I
usually include another round of prototyping in the form of a “gallery
walk”. I think Neil is right that we could improve this process through
specifically using the IDEO approach within the innovation teams, by
breaking them down into sub-groups of 2-3 to rapid prototype selected ideas
from the first brainstorm. This would enable many more ideas to be tested
out within the relative safety of each innovation team.
