Hi Lora
Retirement carries many meanings for people so it is useful to explore these
meanings first and put them in context. I have found it useful to focus on
the change and transition issues first, working towards recognising
resources available that can assist during the transition. So I will ask
questions about their best experiences of change, what they valued about
themselves at the time, what value did other people provide, and questions
locating the strength that allowed them to transition successfully during
those times. While there are many common factors that help, this can have
personal value for each person. You could also do this in terms of life
stages successfully negotiated in the past - framing retirement as a life
stage, not an ending! It is also useful to ask questions about retired
people that they know: Think of a retired person you know...What have they
done well that you would want to do? What have they done that you would want
to do differently in your journey towards retirement?
Creating excitement about possibilities for the future is challenging and
fun. Using AI to focus on personal strengths, interests, ideas and
opportunities that can be built on in the future is the focus. The
underlying idea is to discover what 'works', what people want to create more
of in their lives, and create ways to build on these. I think the 'magazine
cover' question works well...
* it is 5 years time and you are featured on the cover of a popular
local/national/international magazine...
- which magazine is it?
- what is your feature story about?
- what have you achieved? how did you do this?
- who supported you in this achievement?
This allows people to tap into their own meanings of 'success' in future
years and begin defining some of the ways they may move towards achieving
this.
