We have used Appreciative Inquiry as the social learning model in our Org
Psyc class at JFK University for about 7 years now. The goal of the class is
to increase each student's self awareness as they prepare for consulting,
coaching and management roles with and in organizations.
The initial inquiry we pose for them as they begin their learning program is
framed to help them become more open to learning and more aware of what they
already know about creating extraordinary learning for themselves and for
other members of their learning cohort:
Think of a time when you experienced or participated in extraordinary
learning, when the experience of learning had a powerful impact on you and your
view of the world, when you felt yourself grow in ways that have been very
important to you. It may not have seemed a positive experience at the time, but
the ultimate results were long-lasting and life-giving.
We do similar inquiries about receiving feedback and about their learning
goals at various points in the class.
Other learning models we use include Ladder of Inference as an internal
framework for understanding how we participate in or resist learning, Kolbe's
Learning Styles Inventory, and the Jo-Hari Window to help students recognize the
efficacy for learning in both receiving feedback and practicing
self-disclosure.
