Hi Chuck,
Good luck with this challenge! I'm of the belief that rewards seem richest
when the challenges are the greatest, so you may very well see some
wonderful rewards in this process.
With respect you your question, two things come to mind. First, the AI
Commons has some terrific material available relative to the issues you
raise. In particular, I recommend that you read everything you can relative
to Roadway Express. To me, they are one of the shining lights for those
interested in working with entrenched unions (for example the longshoremen
and the teamsters) and stereotypical (at least in the beginning) management.
As of 2004, Roadway had conducted something like 60+ AI Summits (150 to 250
people attending each). If you do the math, they've dedicated the equivalent
of 19 person years of staff time.
The second thing I suggest you look at is a set of questions from the
Encyclopedia of Positive Questions that focuses specifically on
"Union/Management Partnerships." I'm sure that they will provide you with
some further inspiration.
Regards,
Bill

Subject: [Ailist] suggestions
I am planning two four-hour workshops utilizing AI. I am working with a
group of 12-15 people. Most of the participants are union employees who work
in the field maintaining parks. This is a somewhat conservative group of
"good old boys" (this old culture is changing, however). We will also have
the top management participating in this two-part workshop.
We've gone through significant changes due budget cuts and layoff and are
now ready to come together as a team. Challenges are some negative history
between union and management. On the union side, there is a lot of attitude
around wanting things to be as they were in the old days and many trust
issues.
I am planning to take them through the 5D process with a group is used to
being physically engaged.
Any suggestion or experience from this list of using AI with a
union/management mix and with participants who are used to being physically
engaged.
With appreciation,
Chuck
