Dear Colleagues,

The breaking news of Al Gore winning the Nobel Prize for Peace
certainly highlights his journey to reclaim the leadership he
demonstrated on climate change before the 2000 presidential election.
I submit that his story is compelling, and an excellent example of
Appreciative Intelligence as outlined in the book, APPRECIATIVE
INTELLIGENCE: Seeing the Mighty Oak in the Acorn, by Tojo
Thatchenkery and Carol Metzker.

In interviews with organizational leaders and innovators, they found
"that the ability to reframe, appreciate the positive, and see how
the future unfolds from the present," consistently led to these four
qualities:

* Persistence
* Conviction that one's actions matter
* Tolerance for uncertainty
* Irrepressible resilience

My seeing Al Gore as an exemplar was prompted by an email that I
received from a friend last week while conducting an Appreciative
Inquiry Facilitator Training in Boulder, Colorado. He called my
attention to another Novel Prize winner's story, perhaps even more
compelling, just published in the UK Independent:

"...Nobel prize-winning scientist Dr. Mario Capecchi at the
University of Utah whose story is truly amazing. If you have a
moment, read the short version of his story (click below)."

My local paper, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat carried a similar story
with this headline: "From homeless child to Nobel winner."

For the Independent story, go to:

Capecchi: The man who changed our world

If that link does not work for you, here is the full url:

At the bottom of the article is a link to the Wikipedia entry:

As Tojo and Carol point out in their book, "Everyone has Appreciative
Intelligence." The key is identifying, developing and enhancing it
in yourself and others. Al Gore and Mario Capecchi are wonderful
exemplars  for us all.

Best wishes,

Charles
