Hi Karin,
I have some theory stuff for you and your student, all available on
Amazon and likely at your local university library:
Try W.J.T. Mitchell's work on visual representation. He's a key
theory guru in this area:
The Language of Pictures (1980)
Iconology (1987)
Picture Theory (1995)
What Do Pictures Want? (2006)
Also, try:
Kress, Gunther. Multimodal Discourse: The Modes and Media of
Contemporary Communication (2001)
Pink, Sarah. Doing Visual Ethnography: Images, Media and
Representation in Research (2001)
Prosser, Jon. Image-based Research: A Sourcebook for Qualitative
Researchers (1998)
Van Leeuwen, Theo. Handbook of Visual Analysis (2001)
Understanding the power of pictures was a facet of the research I did
for my PhD (family values metaphors in British pictorial political
argument during the Age of Revolution).
Please feel free to email me if you want more help on this. I'd be
more than happy to assist another student in getting through the ordeal!
Cheers!
Virginia
