Hi Terry,

I am delighted to see that we are “getting press” in advance of publication.
The paper you are referring to will be presented at the Academy of
Management in August and will be published in the AOM Proceedings. The
correct citation will read something like as follows:

Donovan, L.L., Myer, S. R., Fitzgerald, S. Transformative Learning and
Appreciative Inquiry: A More Perfect Union for Deep Organizational Change.
Proceedings of the Academy of Management. Philadelphia, 2007.

Regarding the phrase that you quote, it is not ours. I’ve scoured both the
full proposal paper and the condensed publication version and, while the
meaning could be construed from our writing, we do not use those exact
words. One relevant phrase that we did include was:

When AI is informed by TL theory, the conditions of a Reflective Practicum
(Schön, 1983) are created. As the AI practitioner provides opportunities for
dialogue and reflection-in- and on-action, participants are able to deepen
the shift in thinking created by taking an appreciative stance. This
critical self-reflection has previously been seen in the action learning
approach of Revans (1978, 1982), designed to generate solutions utilizing
the concrete experiences of the group.

I will be happy to send you the paper for your own use. Please let me know
if you are interested.

Loretta

I have a part reference in a research paper I am working on. It is:

Donovan, L.L., Fitzgerald, S. and Myer, S. (in preparation).

Transformative Learning and Appreciative Inquiry: A More Perfect Union for
Deep Organizational Change, Proceedings of the Academy of Management.

For the life of me, I cannot find either the paper or where I obtained the
reference. It is possibly cited in another paper.

In particular I am trying to locate a quote that the 'lack of a reflective
practicum (in AI) limits ability to inspire transformational change'.

If anyone can assist me, I would muchly appreciate it.
