[Ailist] thoughts on working in pairs in small groups

Hello,  I just have to weigh in with a hearty endorsement of having people
work in pairs, whether there are 4 or 40 or 400 in the room.  Listening to
another human being with the intention of giving all of who are you,
listening with all of your heart and mind, is such an act of generosity, and
is, in itself, transformative for both the listener and the speaker.  After
this quality of listening has occurred, it does create a field of
receptivity within the larger group that I don't think would there without
the prior work in dyads.

Even in groups of 6-7 I always have them pair up. Often I frame it as a
chance to spend a little 1-1 time with someone in the group whom you perhaps
do not know quite as well. That seems to help move them along.

Please let me know your experience and thinking on having people work in
pairs when the large group is very small - maybe 5 or 6 people.  The last
small group (7 people) I worked with some group members resisted working in
pairs as they thought it was a small enough group to discuss the
appreciative questions as a group.  I am working with a group of 5 next week
and anticipate the same resistance.  I myself like the pairs as it is was to
create more intimacy and trust but perhaps I am off the mark here.

I look forward to knowing others input on this.
