Here is snippet in the Harvard Business Review November 2007, Thomas Stewart 
has an Editorial "What Kind of Decision  Is It?" it may help build your case 
for AI.

'Leaders Do Many things. They inspire, motivate; they set strategy, they 
wield power: they align people: they set an example: they represent an 
organization to outsiders. More than anything else, however, leaders help the people 
around them make sense of the world in which they find themselves. Inspiring, 
strategizing and acting all depend on sense making........

Leaders 'sense making role is often underplayed.....
When leaders come to a shared understanding of the world, all their other 
jobs get easier."

It sounds like the new team you are working with is undervaluing their role 
in sense making.
