August 2007 Update from T H A T A W A Y. O R G - Home of the National
Coalition for Dialogue & Deliberation

Hi, everyone. Sorry for the long email, but there's a lot to tell you about
this month!

1. Become a Paid Member of NCDD Now and Receive a Free Copy of The Change
Handbook

It's a great time to join NCDD! We were able to get our hands on another 70
copies of The Change Handbook, a wonderful new resource that retails for
$60, and we're sending one copy to everyone who joins NCDD and pays the
optional membership fee (while supplies last, of course). Membership for
individuals is only $50/year, and organizational membership is only
$100/year. Other benefits for paying the fee include discounts to NCDD's
biennial conference and substantial discounts to dozens of the best
trainings offered in this field (see #5 below). It's actually a pretty
unbelievable deal, and we could really use your support!

Go to www.thataway.org/members for info on how to join NCDD. And join us
even if you can't pay the membership fee; we'd love to have you!

2. Get Involved in Planning the 2008 NCDD Conference in Austin, Texas!

Our next National Conference on Dialogue & Deliberation will be held October
3-5, 2008 in Austin, Texas - a fantastic city with of dialogue,
deliberation, and civic engagement innovations going on. We're putting
together the 2008 planning team now, and I encourage you to consider joining
us. NCDD's biennial conferences are unique experiments in collaborative
planning, and we have managed dynamic planning teams of about 60 people for
each of our three previous conferences.

Interested? Sign up at
www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=GuVbsmnPbFte7tzUvxhetw_3d_3d. Also, consider
supporting the 2008 conference by Co-Sponsoring or Partnering with us
(you'll get over a year of publicity if you start now!). Learn more about
the 2008 conference at www.thataway.org/events/2008.php, or email me if
you'd like to look over the support/sponsorship options.

3. NCDD Members Played Leading Role in August Youth Conference in D.C.

This year's theme for Arsalyn's annual youth conference was "Bridging the
Partisan Divide: Rediscovering Deliberation," and NCDD played an important
role at the event. We introduced the four streams of dialogue and
deliberation practice (www.thataway.org/streams) in a plenary session and
brought NCDD members in from each of the streams (Conversation Café for
Exploration; the Sustained Dialogue Campus Network and IISD for Conflict
Transformation; National Issues Forums for Decision-Making; and Study
Circles for Collaborative Action) to lead multiple workshops and interactive
plenary sessions. By the end of the event, the students, who were
extraordinarily bright and engaged - clearly demonstrated that they had
learned how to utilize dialogue and deliberation to address complicated
public conflicts and issues.

NCDD hopes to be able to coordinate, hand-in-hand with some of our members,
these kinds of programs at future events. Learn more about what we did at
this August 9-12 event at http://thataway.org/index.php/?page_id=886.

4. Learning Exchange spotlight:

NCDD's Learning Exchange (www.thataway.org/exchange/) - now includes over
2200 resources. This month, I want to bring your attention to the "Issues
Addressed Through D&D" category at
www.thataway.org/exchange/categories.php?cid=62. Here, you can choose from
dozens of subcategories depending on what issue you're helping to address.
Click on "Environmental Issues & Sustainability" if you're planning to run a
deliberation program on global warming, for example, and you'll find guides
to D&D focused on that issue, background information about the issue, videos
you can play at the beginning of your program, research and case studies
illustrating how public discourse has impacted the issue, and more.

Check out the issues we have listed there, and feel free to let us know if
you think we should add an issue to the list!

And here are just a few of the new resources we've added to the Learning
Exchange in the past 30 days:

- The $9 Trillion Debt: Breaking the Habit of Deficit Spending
- Teachers, Study Circles and the Racial Achievement Gap
- Healthy Democracy Oregon
- What's Behind Issue Framing and Why Does it Matter?
- Consensus Statement and Survey for Wise Democracy Victoria II

To see all the resources that were added in the past 30 days, you can always
go to www.thataway.org/exchange/recent.php. If you're new to the Learning
Exchange, I also encourage you to look over our How to Use the Learning
Exchange page at http://thataway.org/index.php/?page_id=492.

The "dialogue and deliberation community" is a loose-knit community of
practitioners, researchers, activists, artists, students, and others who are
committed to giving people a voice and making sure that voice counts. NCDD
provides the infrastructure needed in this community so we can work together
to increase both our individual and our collective impact.
