[Ailist] Wall of Wonder

Hi Anne,

Thank you for sharing the Wall of Wonder examples you received and to the others who also posted their tools and experiences. With the process that Judith described, and also Joep's, provided by Mo, and what Ann provided, I am reminded of doing Future Search where we invited people to share their stories a system's history, in whichever way served them, on a wall (and sometimes the wall continued around all 4 walls in the room) covered in a roll of paper. It is very effective. This paper was divided with two parallel lines running horizontally along so there were three lanes. One lane was the history or milestones of the organizational system, a second lane was what people remembered about events in the wider environment (the world at large) and in the third lane, usually the lower lane, people recorded what was happening in their own private worlds. Important piece: the paper on the wall was also divided vertically into chunks of time e.g. 1970 - 1980, 1980 - 1985 and so on. If the organization was a very old one we went back, even if no-one in the room was alive at that time. This was to give a perspective of what the whole history was about. By looking at all three systems - organization, global and personal we would get an palpable sense of the interconnectedness of the whole and a full systems view. This helped to make sense of what was going on (these days I would add: in a truly appreciative way).

As I viewed these examples, I realize that I use a tool that could also be classified as a Wall of Wonder - an electronic Wall of Wonder. The .pdf attachment gives a screen shot.

The process is fully described on http://positivematrix.dnsalias.com:8098/features/features/how-does-it-work.html

In a nutshell, we follow an etiquette of Talk, Type, Read and Review which works in the following way:

        * A series of questions related to the topic are projected one by one onto a large screen.
        * The questions are supported by graphics and quotes relevant to the topic of inquiry to help the members tap into their emotional quotient as well as their thinking.

 Step 1- Talk
Pairs or small groups engage in a conversation related to a specific question in the inquiry.

Step 2 – Type
On wireless keyboards individuals type up what they talked about and their ideas are displayed for everyone in the room to see.

	 Step 3 – Read
All inputs are read out loud so that everyone’s contribution is heard.

Step 4 – Review
Themes, patterns, commonalities, questions, actions are identified by the group and keyed in.

FYI for anyone attending the Positive Change Conference in Orlando in September we will be leading a session called "21st Century Wisdom Tools that Broaden and Build". It is my hypothesis that conducting meetings is this way i.e. starting with inviting individuals to share their best experiences of a given topic, we find people connect to their own best, most positive experience of an event and thereby become more flexible, inclusive, social interaction and play is speeded up and a definite sense of self-other overlap or “oneness” is expressed and felt. Moreover, a positive workable outcome that people feel good about is achieved in a very short timeframe. My intuition is that the more of these meetings people participate in, the greater the building effect and change can be sustained. This to me is a tool that helps broaden and build, as I currently understand Barbara Fredrickson's theory.

Kindest regards,

Thank you, Mo and everyone else who found different versions of the Wall of Wonder and sent them to the listserv.

For those who want more I attach two others which were sent to me directly and which are in the attached folder as pdfs.

Yet again, I am in awe of how generous you are and so thankful.

With warmest wishes,

Anne
