Thanks Nick for the link to this site.
"The clearest theory for explaining why this happens is in the
literature of
re-evaluation counselling www.rc.org. Essentially this says that
attention
helps you release blocking emotion that gets in the way of you
thinking."
I wanted to share my "aha" from exploring it - realizing that my "aha"
might be a blinding flash of the obvious (BFO) to y'all!
In the page on the recovery process there is a great example of an
attempt to tell a recovery story that is thwarted by the "listener"
interrupting with "I had an experience like that..". When setting up the
group for paired interviews I don't give a lot of instruction as usually
I'm not training AI interviewers at this point, just facilitating the
process. One thing I do highlight though is that this is not a
conversation in the usual sense and use a similar example as a "what not
to do". I also ask if that's ever happened to them and ask that they
reflect on what that felt like so they don't do it during the AI
interview.
Basically, it feels bad and we feel disrespected and possibly
dissatisfied with the conversation - frustrated that we weren't really
heard. The explanations on re-evaluation counseling and this recovery
process make great sense of this experience and add another place where
we can connect to the richness of the appreciate experience.
One more piece of the puzzle!
