Collaborative Law is a voluntary dispute resolution technique in which lawyers trained in the collaborative law process assist their clients to resolve their disagreements and avoid litigation and other adversarial processes. Used primarily in the family law context for over a decade to dissolve marriages and manage child custody issues as amicably as possible, collaborative law also promises great benefits for business-oriented disputes. It is a client-driven, solution-oriented process in which information is shared rather than fought over, good faith and fairness reign, and a positive, respectful communication style holds sway. The principles and philosophy of Appreciative Inquiry mesh well with the collaborative process.
This training, approved by the California State Bar for 6 Continuing Education Credits, provides basic training in civil collaborative law with a focus on business, probate, employment and other disputes outside the family law arena. The strengths-based, positive perspectives of Appreciative Inquiry are woven throughout. Because financial experts, business planning and communications coaches are often used in the collaborative process, this training is appropriate for those professionals, as well.

Presenters Biography
I have been a practicing attorney for many years, hoping to improve the world through our judicial and legislative systems. Because progress was slow, I began searching for ways to help people be the change they want to see in the world and find their root causes of success. During this quest, I was trained as a mediator, civil collaborative practitioner, co-active coach and group facilitator, all of which allow people to be heard, dream big and implement their wishes and desires through partnership and collaboration.
The most delicious piece has been adding Appreciative Inquiry to help people use their strengths and successes to forge a compelling future. I have given AI workshops and presentations for CompassPoint Non-Profit Services, New Leaders for New Schools (AI and Coaching), the Minnesota Collaborative Law Institute (AI and civil law cases), the Santa Clara Bar Association ADR Section (AI and Mediation) and the International Center of Austin (AI and volunteer program development), among others.
